Production of cytostatic extemporaneous drugs for the hospitals in Varberg, Halmstad, Falkenberg and Kungsbacka begins in Varberg on the 1st of December 2011. Other sterile extemporaneous drugs will be distributed from APL’s facilities in Hisingsbacka.
“We are very pleased with how APL has managed the implementation project, which ensures that the cytostatic preparations will be manufactured in Varberg starting on the 1st of December 2011.” says Patrik Olsson, Director of the Department of Pharmacy at Halland Hospital. “Chemotherapy is a important part of our duties at Halland Hospital. It is therefore pleasing that we have, together with APL, put in place a well-functioning manufacturing solution that will cover the whole region of Halland.”
According to the agreement, APL will operate as part of the regional hospital pharmacy in order to be able to provide both sterile and non-sterile custom extemporaneous drugs. The operational launch takes place in Varberg on the 1st of December 2011, while other manufacturing units in Västra Götaland begin deploying their first batches of the drugs in March 2012.
“We are very content over having been appointed such an important task for these key municipalities. We are also pleased to begin producing the drugs in Varberg”, says Eva Sjökvist Saers, Managing Director at APL. “Our collaboration with Region Halland and Region Västra Götaland has been excellent and we look forward to launching the remaining production units.
Extemporaneous pharmaceuticals, including cytostatic drugs, are important in the quest for individualized drug therapy. The final preparations of cytostatic drugs are done immediately before they are administered and the dosage is adjusted to each specific patient. Extemporaneous drugs are important for the community as a whole in that they fulfill the medical needs of patients who cannot be medicated with registered drugs. Extemporaneous drugs are prescribed in the same way as registered drugs and are manufactured with special permission from the Swedish Medical Products Agency.
