Apoteket Produktion & Laboratorier AB, APL, a subsidiary to Apoteket AB, has for several years been responsible for the manufacturing of special pharmaceuticals, i.e. personalised medicine, for patients with special needs in the Swedish health care sector. When the Swedish pharmacy market opens up for competition, all operators will have an obligation to provide special pharmaceuticals. The APL range of special pharmaceuticals will be made available to all operators in the Swedish market.
“We are very happy to be able to offer special pharmaceuticals to all operators,” says Eva Sjökvist Saers, Managing Director of APL. “Our range of special pharmaceuticals is continuously developed in close collaboration with specialists such as physicians, dentists, veterinaries and the Medical Products Agency.
These pharmaceuticals are extremely important for patients with special needs – and can be crucial in saving lives. “We are currently in talks with pharmacy operators regarding deliveries of special pharmaceuticals,” says Eva Sjökvist Saers. The range of products is completely prescription-based, and APL seeks to secure efficient deliveries and good supply of this quality assured assortment.
Special pharmaceuticals are prescribed to patients with special needs. APL develops and manufactures these pharmaceutials, that supplements the pharmaceuticals offered by the pharmaceutical industry. Approximately 1–2% of pharmaceuticals used in the health care sector are special pharmaceuticals. Special pharmaceuticals are most frequently used where the strength, composition and dosage form have to be personalised, for both children and adults.
Besides prescription medicines delivered via pharmacies, APL also manufactures special pharmaceuticals for use at hospitals. APL develops and manufactures pharmaceuticals for children, where strength and dosage form have to be adapted for the individual child. APL also develops various types of pain management medicine adapted to different patient needs.
“As APL currently has a national responsibility for the manufacturing of these pharmaceuticals, we have a very good overview of national demand. When demand increases, these pharmaceuticals are mass-produced to facilitate rational manufacturing and stock-keeping for efficient deliveries. Our product range is continuously developing, and thus good ideas can benefit everyone,” says Eva Sjökvist Saers.
