How we work with effective collaboration in pharmaceutical manufacturing

When collaboration in pharmaceutical manufacturing works well, it is rarely by coincidence. In our experience, many decisive factors relate to how collaboration is structured and developed over time.

Making assumptions explicit early on
Projects often begin with shared goals, but with differing assumptions around responsibilities, decision rights and ways of working. We actively work to make these assumptions explicit at an early stage, reducing the risk of misunderstandings as projects progress.

Using transparency as a foundation
Deviations, uncertainties and changes are part of reality. When they are raised early, better conditions are created for joint decision-making and realistic planning. We view transparency as a prerequisite for collaboration, rather than a risk.

Considering long-term implications from the start
Even projects with a limited scope are influenced by early decisions around documentation, scalability and knowledge transfer. In our approach, we therefore take into account how early choices may affect future phases if projects evolve or expand.

Understanding context and interfaces
Technical expertise is essential, but effective collaboration also requires an understanding of regulatory frameworks, operational constraints and the interaction between quality, development and manufacturing.
These interfaces are an important focus in our everyday work.

This perspective shapes how we collaborate in practice and is a recurring theme in our dialogue with partners and industry peers, including ahead of NLS days and CPHI Milan.

About APL

Apotek Produktion & Laboratorier (APL) is one of Europe’s leading companies manufacturing extemporaneous drugs and stock preparations. We have a public policy assignment from the Swedish government, but also work together with other pharmaceutical companies to create the greatest possible patient benefit. The assignment also comprises preparedness to maintain operations in times of crisis and ultimately war.

Our vision is that we will make a difference for patients with additional needs. We are also an established contract manufacturer within life science in Scandinavia, where we deliver services within development and analysis. With more than 500 employees and five manufacturing units in Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Umeå, we develop drugs that improve and save lives.
